TRAVEL TEAM TRYOUTS

To All Parents of Kids interested in trying out for Madison travel basketball teams,

Travel basketball is an important aspect of our program.  These teams are for players who have begun to develop a skill level necessary for this type of competition.   Our teams will be competing in the Jersey Basketball Association.  Game play begins in early December and will include travel to nearby towns.  Travel participants should be able to commit to practices and games several days each week throughout the season.

Tryouts for the 2014/15 season will begin the week of October 12th.  All boys and girls in grades 4 through 8 that are interested in trying out for a team shall attend their scheduled tryouts (see below).  Any boy or girl in grades 4 through 6 that make a travel team, WILL BE REQUIRED to participate in the recreation program.  Those in grades 7 and 8 are not required to participate in the recreation program.

All kids interested in trying out shall be registered in the program prior to their first scheduled tryout date ($75 registration fee).  If your child does not make a travel team and then decides not to play in the recreation program, your registration fee will be refunded.  Those who make a travel team will owe an additional $75 to be paid prior to the start of the season.

There will be a minimum of 2 tryouts for each team (unless a team does not require a selection process due to the number of kids trying out).  Tryouts will be run by coaches, but the players will be independently evaluated for purposes of selecting the teams.  Kids are expected to attend all of their tryouts but are required to attend at least 1 of the scheduled tryout slots.  If your child cannot make their first scheduled tryout, please let us know through the feedback tab on our website (www.madisonhoops.com ).

Please submit any questions through the feedback tab.

The recreation basketball season will begin the weekend of December 6th and 7th for boys in grades 1 through 6 and girls in grades 1 through 8.  There will be no sessions the weekends of December 20/21 and 27/28.  The last session for grades 1-3 will be February 21 and the last session for boys’ grades 4-6 and girls grades 4-8 will be March 8.

Like prior seasons, grades 1-3 for both boys and girls will take place Saturday mornings and consist of drill sessions and game play.  The time and location will remain the same for these grades throughout the season. Boys’ sessions will take place at the Madison Junior School (MJS). Girls’ sessions will take place at Central Avenue School (CAS).

The schedule is expected to be as follows (note that times and locations are subject to change):

Boys (first initials of last name):
Grade 1 (A through K) - 8:05am to 9:05am
Grade 1 (L - Z) - 9:10am to 10:10am

Grade 3 (A through J) - 12:25pm to 1:25pm

Girls:
Grade 1 – 8:15am to 9:15am

Grade 3 – 10:40am to 11:55am

Grades 4-6 for boys and grades 4-8 for girls will consist of drill sessions in December and games each weekend following the holidays for the remainder of the season.  The kids will be assigned permanent teams in late December and the game schedule will be posted over the holiday break to start in January.  Boys’ grades 4, 5 and 6 games will take place Sunday afternoons. All Sunday games will be at Madison High School (MHS). Girls’ grades 4 through 8 will take place on Sunday afternoons at MHS. The schedule for December (subject to changes) is expected to be as follows:

Grades 6/7/8 - 2:30pm to 3:35 pm or 3:40pm to 4:45pm - Sunday

TRAVEL BASKETBALL

Travel basketball is another important aspect of our program.  Players in grades 4 through 8 may choose to try out for one of our many travel teams.  These teams are for players who have begun to develop a skill level necessary for this type of competition.  Travel team tryouts are tentatively scheduled to be held the weeks of October 12th and 19th.  Try outs will likely be 2 or 3 nights in the two week span.  Specific dates by grade/gender will be determined in early October.

For those selected, game play begins in early December and will continue through mid-March.  Travel participants should be able to commit to practices and games several days each week throughout the season.  All travel players (other than boys in grades 7 and 8) are required to participate in the recreation program.  Those who do not attend majority of the recreation program activities will get reduced playing time in travel games.  This program rule intends to maintain the competitiveness of the recreation program and promote inclusion for all Madison children who wish to participate in the recreation program but are not on a travel team.  Coaches will be required to enforce this program rule.  Travel players who make a team will be required to pay an additional $75 at the time that they are selected to a travel team.

We look forward to the season!
